Buffering and Batching

Accumulating multiple small operations into fewer large operations amortizes the fixed overhead of I/O initiation across more useful work, trading latency for throughput.

Tension Addressed

Latency vs. Throughput

Recognizable As

Write buffers, read-ahead, database commit batching, network packet coalescing, "flush" operations, buffer size configuration, any "batch size" parameter

Canonical Sources

Knuth, "The Art of Computer Programming"; any operating systems textbook covering I/O subsystems

Transfers To

Network protocols (Nagle's algorithm), database write optimization, stream processing, graphics rendering (draw call batching), API design (bulk endpoints)

The optimal buffer size balances memory usage, latency requirements, and the amortization benefit. Too small loses amortization benefits; too large wastes memory and increases latency.
