Stateless Protocol Design

Protocols where each request contains all information needed for processing enable horizontal scaling and simplify failure recovery; any apparent statefulness is pushed to explicit storage (client tokens, database, cache).

Tension Addressed

Statelessness vs. Efficiency

Recognizable As

REST architectural style, JWT tokens, session externalization, shared-nothing architecture, serverless functions

Canonical Sources

Fielding, REST dissertation (2000); RFC 7230-7235 HTTP specifications

Transfers To

API design, microservices architecture, serverless computing, horizontal scaling patterns

Statelessness is a trade-off, not a virtue. It simplifies scaling but requires explicit state management elsewhere and increases per-request overhead.
