ACID Properties as Transaction Guarantees

Reliable data modification requires four properties working together: Atomicity (all-or-nothing), Consistency (valid state transitions), Isolation (concurrent operations don't interfere), Durability (committed changes survive failures).

Tension Addressed

Data Integrity vs. Performance

Recognizable As

Transaction boundaries, rollback mechanisms, commit protocols, write-ahead logging, multi-statement operations that succeed or fail together

Transfers To

Message queue guarantees, distributed transactions, file system journaling, version control commits, any system requiring reliable state changes

ACID properties are not database-specific; they describe fundamental requirements for reliable state management in any system.
