Amortized Analysis

Individual operation costs can be misleading; the average cost over a sequence of operations often reveals that expensive operations are rare enough that total cost remains manageable.

Tension Addressed

Simplicity vs. Optimality (allows simpler algorithms that occasionally do expensive cleanup)

Recognizable As

Data structures with occasional O(n) operations but O(1) amortized; "banker's method" or "potential method" analysis; dynamic arrays, splay trees.

Amortized analysis reveals the true cost structure when worst-case analysis is overly pessimistic. The potential function technique assigns "credit" to structure states to pay for future expensive operations.
